Fence repairs and replacement, done properly
Leaning, rotten or storm-damaged fence? We repair what can be saved and replace what cannot, across Hamilton and the Waikato.
Woodney Contracting repairs and replaces fences across Hamilton and the greater Waikato. Whether it is a handful of rotten posts, a storm-damaged boundary or a whole run that has reached the end of its life, we look at what is actually wrong and tell you whether a repair will do. We are fencing contractors first, so the repair is done by the same crew that builds new fences.
Fence repairs and replacement
One crew for the posts, the rails, the palings and the gate.
Posts
Replacing rotten, snapped and leaning posts, which are often the first part of a fence to fail.
Rails, palings & panels
Replacing loose rails and broken or rotten palings, and re-fixing panels.
Whole sections
Taking out and rebuilding a failed run of fence to match the rest.
Gates
Resetting and re-hanging gates that drag, droop or no longer latch.
Signs a fence needs replacing, not patching
Rotten posts
If posts are soft or crumbling at ground level, new palings and rails will not hold.
A long leaning run
A fence leaning along its length usually has a post problem, not a panel problem.
Widespread rot
When many rails and palings are failing, patching one at a time costs more over time.
Loose, wobbling panels
Panels that move in the wind often need new posts or fixings.
Repeat repairs
If you keep fixing the same fence, replacing the run is often better value.
Limited damage
A few sound posts with some failed palings is usually a repair job.

Boundary fence in bad shape?
Under the Fencing Act 1978, neighbours generally share the cost of an adequate boundary fence equally, and there is a notice process if you need a contribution. If the fence was suddenly damaged, either neighbour can do the immediate work and ask the other for half. This is general information, not legal advice. Read the Act or our guide to who is responsible for a boundary fence.

How much is damaged
A few palings cost far less than a run of rotten posts.
Fence type
Paling, picket, slat, post and rail and wire fences all cost differently to repair.
Posts
Replacing posts takes more time than replacing palings or rails.
Ground & access
Clay, rock, roots and tight access slow the work.
Removal
Taking out and disposing of old fence is part of the job.
Gates
Resetting or replacing a gate is quoted separately from the fence either side.

Fence repair questions
01Do you repair fences as well as build new ones?
Yes. We repair and replace timber paling, picket and slat fences, post and rail and post and wire fences, and gates. Tell us what is wrong and we will come and look.
02Should I repair or replace my fence?
If the damage is limited and the posts are sound, a repair is usually enough. If posts are rotten at ground level, a long run is leaning or many palings and rails are failing, replacing is often better value than patching. We will tell you honestly on site. See what a new fence costs to compare.
03Can you replace just a few posts or panels?
Yes. We can replace individual posts, rails and palings and match the existing timber as closely as we can. New timber will look different from weathered timber at first, and we will tell you if a section is better replaced as a whole.
04A storm, tree or vehicle has damaged my fence. Can you help?
Yes. See our emergency fencing page for make-safe and temporary fencing. If a tree is involved, our arborist team can clear it first.
05Who pays to fix a shared boundary fence?
Under the Fencing Act 1978, neighbours generally share the cost of an adequate boundary fence equally. To require a contribution you usually serve a Fencing Notice, and your neighbour has 21 days to respond. If a fence is suddenly damaged, for example by a storm or a fallen tree, either neighbour can do the immediate work without notice and then ask the other for half. This is general information, not legal advice. See the Act and our guide to who is responsible for a boundary fence.
06Do you take away the old fence?
Tell us if an old fence needs to come out so it is included in the quote. Removing and disposing of it is part of many fencing jobs.
07Can you fix a gate that sags or drags?
Often, yes. A gate that drops or drags is usually a post or hinge problem. We will look at whether it can be reset and re-hung or needs replacing. See gates and entrances.
08How much does a fence repair cost?
It depends on how much is damaged, the fence type, the ground and the access. We give you a clear quote after a free on-site look, so you know the price before we start.
09What should I send for a quote?
The address, a few photos of the damage, roughly how much fence is affected, whether it is a boundary fence and whether you want it repaired or replaced.
10What areas do you cover?
We repair and replace fences across Hamilton, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Morrinsville, Ngāruawāhia, Huntly and the surrounding Waikato districts.
